The feeltank made its first t-shirts for the Depression: What is it Good For? conference at the University of Chicago in 2003.

Typically, the contemporary message t-shirt advertises something about the pleasures of the wearer--this is how it's read, even when one's chest becomes a billboard through the accidents of gifting and scavenging.

What we've all found is that this phrase, "Depressed? It might be political!" incites amazing, unpredictable conversations. It is as though the phrase is so anomalous both to t-shirt sentimental sincerity and t-shirt flip irony that the openings it forces tap into vernaculars that existed in the air but had not yet found voice.
